Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning spinning wheel. These are a system of seven energy centres located along the spine. Each chakra corresponds to an area of the body, a colour, a set of behavioural characteristics and stages of spiritual growth.

The seven chakras are the hidden energy channels of a being. They are the energy centres in a person’s biological field and are responsible for his or her physiological and psychological condition as well as certain groups of organs. All vital functions of the human body are determined by energy that spins in the chakras. These can be defined as whirlpools referred, and in Indian, they are considered energy bursts or wheels.

Through the movements and postures of yoga, you can begin to focus your attention and energy to and from the various chakras in your body. This can permit you to compensate for areas that are out of synch with the rest of your body or not active at all. By stabilising the energy amongst all seven of the chakras, balance can be achieved. This spiritual energy is referred to as Kundalini energy. In its dormant state, it can be visualised as a coiled-up snake resting at the base of your spinal column, the Root chakra. Given that the chakras act as pumps or valves controlling the flow of energy through your system, controlled and defined motions such as yoga can be extremely useful in realigning your chakras in such a way, resulting in excellent benefits for both your emotional and physical wellness.

Practicing basic yoga and focusing your energies through simple postures can help you to align your chakras and get all the wheels spinning in the exact same direction and speed. Understanding how to fine tune and manage your chakras through yoga and meditation can assist in bringing balance and peace to your mind, body and spirit.
